It's strange riding into the city. Los Angeles is bustling with people, all of them chasing the dream of a new life in the West, the promise of gold.
They come by boat and wagon and soon they'll be able to come up by rail.
California is still a new state, still deciding on its identity, and the pace is frantic and furious. The noise is enough to have Wesson dancing side- ways against the rein, tail and ears flicking nervously. Sam leans forward, crooning soothing nonsense, as he heads towards his residence. His feet barely touch the ground before his mother is rushing out of the house towards him, her dark skirts flying out behind her.
"Samuel, darling! Oh dear Lord, look at the state of you! I do declare that if I were not your mother I would have mistaken you for some poor vagabond, out to rob me silly. I shall tell Sophia to put the water on directly. Come, I'll get Smith to take that beast of yours to the stables. Come on inside, I shall send for Mr. Hawkins. I'm sure he will be able to whip you up a better outfit than that awful thing you're wearing just now."
Sam shakes his head and follows his chattering mother inside, wondering, yet again, whether she actually needs to breathe while she talks.
The house looks the same, dark wood and delicate chairs, colorful rugs traded up from Mexico, scattered across the stained wooden floors. The smell of beeswax and flowers is heavy in the air.
He follows his mother straight through to the kitchen where she chides Bess, the cook, into preparing him a light repast and sends Sophia, her maid, and Rose the housekeeper, off to draw Sam a bath.
"So Samuel, please tell your mother that you have given up this ridiculous idea of being a marshal and that you shall return to run the estates.
It is all very well being in the city here, but the noise is atrocious, and you know how I love my gardens. I am not as young as I was, you know, and you need to set your mind to finding a wife and producing an heir."
Sam bites his tongue and shoves a large chunk of bread into his mouth in attempt to avoid having to answer his mother. She slaps at his arm with her fan, chiding him gently over his manners. He ignores her somewhat as he finishes eating, her words floating gently past in a soft murmur of sound. Her questioning look brings his attention back.
"Do you not think that is a grand idea, Samuel?"
"Yes, mother. I'm sure your idea is splendid." It's only after the last syllable slides out of his mouth that Sam begins to wonder just exactly what it is he is encouraging.
"That is excellent, darling. I shall write out the invitations tomorrow.
We will have it a week on Friday, I think. Oh my goodness, do you think we should get an extra cook in to help Bess?
